About Discovery Day
For over 12 years, the Gateway Outdoor Learning Center has hosted its annual Discovery Day event. This event is free to the community and provides opportunities for children and their families to experience hands-on learning about the natural world that goes beyond the classroom.
This event supports the mission of the Outdoor Learning Center to provide an educational space to inspire wonder, understanding and connection to the outdoors.
Our History
How the Gateway Outdoor Learning Center Got Started
In 2012 the Gateway Outdoor Learning Center was founded by Matt Crawford and volunteers from the Conneaut community with support from Conneaut Area City Schools. He had a vision of providing a place where students and the community could experience and learn about the natural world.
Collaborations with teachers, administrators, and Board of Education members, ultimately lead to the establishment of the Outdoor Learning Center within the 27 acre site and wooded area surrounding the Gateway Middle School. This initial relationship has grown to include local businesses, individual stakeholders, city, county and state entities.
